The European Union and the United Kingdom negotiated a Withdrawal Agreement, which included a transitional period during which the EU will treat the United Kingdom as if it were a Member State, with all its citizens maintaining their rights under Community law.
What does this agreement consist of?
This agreement entered into force on February 1, 2020, after being agreed on October 17, 2019, together with the Political Declaration that constitutes the framework for the future relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom. It establishes the general clauses for a correct understanding and functioning of the United Kingdom's separation from the EU as a member state. A gradual dissolution of the current agreements is sought to protect the rights of citizens, intellectual property rights, product marketing, etc.
Can I continue driving with my British driving license in Spain?
European regulations on driving licenses remain in force, applying to permits issued by the United Kingdom until the end of the transitional period, scheduled for December 31, 2020.
From that moment on, and taking into account the possibility of the transitional period being extended again, the general regulations on permits from third countries (non-EU countries) will apply. The driving licenses issued by British authorities will allow the holder to drive in Spain for six months after their entry into the country.
If you are the holder of a British driving license and you are going to reside in Spain in the near future, then GD Global Mobility recommends that you apply for an exchange, renewal or replacement of your license for a Spanish equivalent.
